Introduction:

Epilepsy:

Epilepsy is a condition in which a person has recurrent seizures. A seizure is defined as an abnormal, disorderly discharging of the brain’s nerve cells, resulting in a temporary disturbance of motor, sensory, or mental function.

There are two main types of seizures:

Focal seizures:These start in a particular part of your brain, and their names are based on the part where they happen. They can cause both physical and emotional effects and make you feel, see, or hear things that aren’t there.

Generalized seizures:These happen when nerve cells on both sides of brain misfire, that cause muscle spasms, black out, or fall.

There are six types of generalized seizures:

Tonic-Clonic Seizures: These are the most noticeable. When you have this type, your body stiffens, jerks, and shakes, and you lose consciousness. Sometimes you lose control of your bladder or bowels. They usually last 1 to 3 minutes.

Clonic Seizures: Muscles have spasms, which often make your face, neck, and arm muscles jerk rhythmically. They may last several minutes.

Tonic Seizures:The muscles in your arms, legs, or trunk tense up. These usually last less than 20 seconds and often happen when you’re asleep.

Atonic Seizures:Muscles suddenly go limp, and head may lean forward, if person holding something, might be drop it. These usually last less than 15 seconds.

Myoclonic Seizures:Muscles suddenly jerk as if person has been shocked. They may start in the same part of the brain as an atonic seizure, and some people have both myoclonic and atonic seizures.

Absence (or petit mal) Seizures:In this type person is suddenly stare blankly into space, and eyes might roll back in head. They usually last only a few seconds. They’re most common in children under 14.

Causes:

A variety of things can lead to seizures. Possible causes include:

• Traumatic brain injury
• Serious illness or Very high fever
• Stroke
• Lack of oxygen to the brain
• Brain tumor or Cyst
• Alzheimer’s disease
• Maternal drug use or Prenatal injury
• Infectious diseases such as meningitis

Symptoms:

Seizures can affect any process brain coordinates. Seizure signs and symptoms may include:

• Temporary confusion
• A staring spell
• Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs
• Loss of consciousness or awareness
• Psychic symptoms such as fear, anxiety

Symptoms vary depending on the type of seizure. In most cases, a person with epilepsy will tend to have the same type of seizure each time, so the symptoms will be similar from episode to episode.
